Clogging FAQ

What it is the difference between tap and clogging?

Clogging and tap share some common elements and footwork, but are two completely different types of dance. Clogging is done on the downbeat making a rhythmic bass sound while tap is on the upbeat. Cloggers have a more controlled upper body and incorporate many types of dance in their routines. Tappers have a solid tap while cloggers use taps with two or three pieces added to produce a jingle sound.

What kind of shoes do you use?

Cloggers use soft leather shoes with wooden heels or hard soles with metal taps. We usually call them jingle taps. A beginner or more traditional style clogger, would have double taps on the heel and two taps on the ball. The more advanced clogger has those taps plus an extra tap on the toe which is called a buck tap. More advanced cloggers often wear split sole shoes and sometimes use a different set of taps such as bell taps or liberty bell taps for a crisper cleaner sound.

What genre of music do you dance to?

There is no set genre of music for clogging. Clogging is done to many styles of music such as country, bluegrass, rock, pop, hip-hop, show tunes. Clogging can be done to any type of music that has a good beat.

How old do you have to be to clog?

You do not have to be a certain age to start. Clogging is for all ages.
